Name types
The kinds of names on the rail
We do not publish a list. Each name was chosen with a particular kind of business in mind, and it is offered to those businesses directly, so a public catalogue would serve nobody.
What we can describe is how the names are made. If you have an address in mind, ask about it by name and you will get a straight answer.
Five families
What you do, where you do it
A service joined to a city, a county or a region, spelled the way a local customer would say it.
The trade in its own words
Two or three ordinary words for a line of work, the kind people put into a search box without thinking.
Practices patients look for
Dental, therapy, veterinary and specialist practice names, where a clear address matters to people who are already anxious.
The call-out trades
Roofing, plumbing, pools, landscaping and the like: businesses whose customers find them in a hurry, often on a phone.
Things by their plain name
What a product is called in a shop, for the maker or seller who wants the address to say exactly that.
What every name has in common
- .com only. It is the ending people add by habit, so it is the one that catches the traffic.
- Spelled as spoken. No hyphens, no digits, no clever spellings that have to be explained on the phone.
- Short enough to paint. It fits on a sign, a van door or a line of a business card without shrinking the type.
- Nobody else's brand. Generic words only; a name that leans on another company's mark is not one we keep.
